A shower withno step at all.

Most older showers have a raised tile edge to keep the water in. It is easy to trip on, and a shower chair or walker can’t get over it.

We take that edge away. The floor is re-sloped so water runs to the drain, then waterproofed and tiled. You get one level floor from the door to the shower, with good grip underfoot.

Done properly, the floor drains itself and dries between showers. That is the part that has to be built right, and it is the part we take the most care over.

Building work

A shower with no step takes several trades, working in order. This is what the work includes.

  • Asbestos inspection, and removal if needed

    Houses built before the late 1980s often have it in the bathroom walls. We check before anything is opened up. If it is there, a licensed team removes it safely.

  • Carpentry

    Floors and walls are strengthened to carry the new floor slope and fittings. On a timber floor, this is how the level entry is made.

  • Waterproofing

    The floor and the wet walls are sealed to the Australian Standard. It is the most important part of the job, and you can’t see it once it is done.

  • Plumbing

    Pipes are moved or upgraded, with a valve that stops scalding. Done by a licensed plumber and certified.

  • Electrical

    Switches and power points are moved to suit the new room and put within reach. Done by a licensed electrician and certified.

  • Wall linings

    Cement sheet behind the tiles, and damp-proof plasterboard elsewhere. Ordinary plasterboard in a wet area is the most common reason a cheap bathroom fails.

  • Door widening

    If the doorway is too narrow for a chair, we widen it or fit a sliding door. It is quoted with the rest, so there is one approval.

  • Painting and making good

    We paint and finish the areas we worked on, so the room looks complete, not patched.

  1. Design visit

    Our draftsperson measures up and plans the new layout with you and your occupational therapist.

  2. Drawings and a fixed price

    Set out so your funding body can approve them. Nothing is ordered until it is approved.

  3. Out with the old

    We remove the old bathroom, deal safely with any asbestos, and put in the new pipes and wiring.

  4. Waterproofing and tiling

    Waterproofing is done to the Australian Standard and left to set properly before tiling. It is what makes a bathroom last.

  5. Finishing and handover

    Everything is fitted and tested, the room is cleaned, and you get your certificates.

Can I use my toilet immediately after it has been replaced?
No. You must wait 24 hours before using a replacement toilet. This allows the sealant used to secure the toilet base and bolts to set.
How long will my home modification take, and can I stay at home during the work?
Timeframes depend on the type and size of the modification. Larger projects, such as bathroom modifications or ramps, may take several days or longer. Timing may depend on material availability, approvals, and the complexity of the work. Across our home modification work, the average turnaround time is 10 business days. This is an average, rather than a guaranteed completion date for every job. Yes. In most cases, you can remain living in your home while modifications are completed. We aim to minimise disruption and work around your needs where possible. Some work may temporarily affect access to bathrooms, toilets, entrances, or other essential areas. For a full bathroom, access depends on the stages of the rebuild and the time waterproofing needs to set. We give you the dates before we start. Smaller work, such as fitting rails or a seat, may be completed in one visit.
Can I choose materials and finishes that make my home modification look less clinical?
Yes. You can choose from available materials, colours, products, and finishes that complement your home. Tell us the style or look you would like to achieve. Our team can show you available options and will do its best to accommodate particular requests where possible. Floor tiles must have the slip rating your occupational therapist or funding body requires. Very small or very large tiles cost more to lay. You arrange delivery, unless you ask us to.
What happens if unexpected issues are found during the home modification works?

Can you make a bathroom safer without a full renovation?
Often, yes. Grab rails, a fold-down seat, a non-slip floor, and a higher toilet can do a lot without moving a single wall. We look at what makes the bathroom hard to use, and price the smallest change that fixes it.
Will the NDIS, a Home Care Package, or SWEP pay for it?
Often, yes, when the work meets an assessed need. Vital Ease is a registered NDIS provider, a SWEP approved supplier, and a Home Care Packages provider. We set out the quote and papers the way your plan manager, case manager, or occupational therapist needs them.
Do I need an occupational therapist’s report before you start?
Funded bathroom work usually starts with an occupational therapist’s assessment, and we build to what they recommend. If you don’t have one yet, we can still visit, look at the room, and explain what the work involves.
Is a level access shower possible in an older home?
Almost always. It depends on the floor and where the drains run, which we check on the first visit. If the slope can’t be built into the existing floor, there are other ways to get the same flat entry.
