The walk from the bed to the bathroom at two in the morning is the single most dangerous trip anybody makes in their own house. It is done half asleep, usually without glasses, and the light switch is by the door rather than by the bed — so most people do it in the dark rather than crossing the room twice.
A sensor light removes the decision entirely. It comes on because somebody moved, at a level that is enough to see by without waking the household, and it goes off again on its own. It is one of the least expensive changes on this site and one of the few that works while the person is least alert.

Sensor lights, inside and out
Hallways, bathrooms, and the path to the front door. Lighting that comes on by itself is the single most useful electrical change in a house where somebody gets up at night.
Brighter fittings and bathroom heat lamps
Older eyes need substantially more light for the same task. Replacing a dim fitting is cheap, and a heat lamp makes a cold bathroom somewhere a person will not rush.
Power points raised, moved, or added
A point at skirting height means kneeling on the floor to reach it. Raising it to a workable height, or adding one where a chair or a bed actually sits, removes that. Includes points for a bidet seat.
Stove timers and automatic shut-off
For a kitchen where a hotplate has been left on. It is one of the specific risks that decides whether somebody can keep living independently.
Smoke alarms, hardwired or battery
Working alarms in the right places, and interconnected where that is appropriate, so one going off sounds them all. Worth doing at the same time as anything else electrical.
Switchboard upgrades and safety switches
Older Melbourne houses often have a board with no residual current device on it at all. A safety switch is what turns an electric shock into a tripped breaker.
Waterproof outlets and relocated switches
For bathrooms, laundries, and outdoor areas, where the outlet has to be rated for where it actually is.
Replacement light fittings
Straightforward changeovers, usually done alongside something else on the same visit.

This is licensed work, and it is certified
Electrical work in Victoria must be carried out by a licensed electrician, and prescribed work carries a Certificate of Electrical Safety. It is not a handyman job and it is not one to attempt — this is the one area on this site where getting it wrong is fatal rather than inconvenient.
Most of it is not damage-free
Moving a power point, adding a circuit, or upgrading a switchboard means cutting into walls and altering the fixed wiring of the building. Some items — a fitting changeover, a plug-in sensor light — genuinely are simple. We will tell you which yours is at the quote.
If you rent, you cannot arrange this yourself
Altering fixed wiring is the owner’s decision, not the tenant’s, and doing it without consent is a serious problem for both of you. Ring us and we will explain the work so you can put it to the agent — smoke alarms and safety switches in particular are usually the owner’s obligation anyway.
Some of it may already be required
Working smoke alarms and safety switches are not optional extras in a rented property. If yours are missing or failing, that is worth raising with the agent as compliance rather than as a request for a favour.

Quoting
Quoted to the occupational therapist’s specification where there is one, with our recommendations alongside it. Tell us the problem rather than the product and we will price the work. Funding is approved before we start.
On-site consultation and installation
A licensed electrician comes out, agrees the positions and heights with the person who will use them, carries out the work, tests it, and certifies it. Most of these are a single visit.
Warranty
The work is carried out by licensed tradespeople and backed by the relevant warranties. If something is not right, ring the same number you rang the first time.
Beyond switchesand lighting.
Where somebody wants lighting, climate, security, and door entry on one panel or one voice command, that is home automation rather than minor electrical work — a bigger scope, and quoted differently.
