Two problems onthe same edge.
A step edge in a garden or on a deck is dangerous twice over. It is slippery when it is wet, and it is hard to see at dusk — particularly for anyone whose contrast sensitivity has changed, which happens to almost everyone with age and happens sharply after cataract surgery.
A marked edge solves both at once. The strip grips the foot and it tells the eye exactly where the step is, which is what stops somebody putting a foot half onto it.
The same idea works inside on a smaller scale. A shower base or a bath floor gets a clear, skin-safe tape rather than a coloured one, because bare feet stand on it every day and a coarse external tape would be unpleasant.

Clear, skin-safe tape for wet areas
For internal wet areas — shower bases, bath floors. Clear, so it does not change how the base looks, and made to be comfortable under a bare foot rather than abrasive. This is the only one of the three we would put in a shower.
Coloured tape, indoors and out
For step edges, ramp edges, and walkways. It grips and it marks the edge in one strip, and it comes up cleanly, which makes it the temporary and rental-friendly option. Suits smooth, sealed surfaces — sealed concrete, glossed tile, and flat flooring.
Vision paint, for rough external surfaces
A painted strip rather than an applied tape, for surfaces no tape will stick to: timber decking, unsealed concrete, porous paving. Semi-permanent, and the right answer outdoors where a tape would lift within a season.

Falls prevention in the home
The single commonest reason. Usually the back steps, the deck, and the shower base, in that order.
Anyone whose eyesight has changed
A marked edge is as much about being seen as being gripped. It matters most in the half-light, which is when most step falls happen.
Renters and short stays
Tape lifts off cleanly and needs nobody’s permission, which makes it the answer where nothing can be fixed or altered.
Anyone waiting on a bigger job
Tape can go down this week while a set of steps or a ramp is still being assessed. It is not a permanent answer and it is a great deal better than nothing in the meantime.
Before you book,two things to know.
Nothing is drilled and nothing is damaged
Tape is applied to the surface and lifts off again. It needs no structural work and no permission, which makes it suitable for an owned or a rented property equally.
Vision paint is semi-permanent
It is the outdoor answer precisely because it does not lift, which also means it does not come off easily. On a deck or a path that is what you want; if you need something removable, use tape.
The surface has to be right, and dry
Tape will not hold on a rough, porous, or damp surface, and a strip that lifts at one corner is a trip hazard rather than a fix. We check the surface before quoting and we will tell you if paint is the honest answer instead.
It is a maintenance item, not a fitting
Tape outdoors has a limited life and will need replacing. That is fine as long as somebody knows to check it — a tape nobody has looked at for three years is not doing anything. For a staircase used daily, a fixed nosing lasts far longer.

How the jobactually runs.
Quoting
Quoted to the occupational therapist’s specification where there is one. A photograph of the surface is usually enough for us to say which of the three you want. Funding is approved before we start.
On-site consultation and installation
The same tradesperson confirms the surface, cleans and dries it properly — which is what decides whether tape holds — and applies it. One visit, and steps are usable straight away with tape.
Warranty
The work is carried out by licensed tradespeople and backed by the relevant warranties. If something is not right, ring the same number you rang the first time.
On stairs usedevery day.
Tape on a staircase somebody climbs a dozen times a day will need replacing within a year or two. A fixed nosing does the same job — grip and a visible edge — and lasts far longer.
If the steps are internal and in constant use, price the nosings first.
