Two problems,both at the tap.

The first is turning the tap. Round taps have to be gripped and twisted, and arthritis often makes that hard. A lever tap only needs a push, even with a closed hand or an elbow.

The second is hot water, and it is more serious. The water in your hot water system is kept hot enough to burn skin. If your skin has lost some feeling, you may not notice until it is too late.

A small valve fixes this at the source, so the water from your taps is always safe. Most homes we visit need both changes, and we do them on the same visit.

What temperature should the hot water be?
At a home’s bathroom taps, the plumbing standards say no hotter than 50°C. In aged care and similar settings, it is 45°C. Your hot water system keeps water much hotter, to stop germs growing, so a tempering valve cools it before it reaches you.
Can I just change the handles rather than the whole tap?
Often, yes. A lever handle set replaces the handles on your existing taps, with no tiling disturbed and usually no damage at all. Whether your taps can take one depends on the type. Send us a photo and we will tell you.
Do you need a licensed plumber for this?
Yes, for all of it. Tap and hot water work must be done by a licensed plumber and certified, in both Victoria and New South Wales. It matters: a badly fitted tempering valve is more dangerous than none, because everyone in the house trusts the tap.
Can taps be changed in a rental?
Changing to lever handles usually damages nothing, so it is easy to get agreed. A tempering valve is plumbed in at the hot water system and needs the owner’s or the agent’s permission. Many owners are glad of it, because it protects them too.
Will the NDIS or my Home Care Package pay for new taps?
Usually. Lever taps and tempering valves are minor home modifications, which are the simplest kind to get approved. An occupational therapist will often recommend both after a burn or a fall. We set out our quotes so they are easy to approve.
