Merbau or composite — which should I choose?
Merbau is a dense hardwood with a rich, natural grain, and it wants oiling to keep its colour. Composite costs more at the outset and asks almost nothing of you afterwards — no sanding, no oiling, and no splintering underfoot. For a household where nobody is going to be up a ladder maintaining it, composite is usually the better answer.
Can a ramp be built into the deck?
Yes, and where the fall of the land allows it that is the neatest solution. The ramp becomes part of the deck rather than a structure bolted on beside it, and it removes the step instead of working around it.
Can you add handrails to a deck I already have?
Yes. Adding a compliant handrail to an existing deck or its steps is common work for us, and it is often the one change that makes the outside of the house usable again.
How much maintenance does composite decking need?
A wash. It is made from recycled wood fibre and plastic, so it resists weather, stains, and fading, and it does not warp, rot, or need resealing.
