A door that swings into a small room takes a big piece of the floor with it. In a bathroom or toilet, that is often most of the space. It is why a walker won’t fit, or a carer can’t stand beside you.

Rehang the door to open outwards, and that floor space is yours again. Nothing is built, and the room is the same size, but you have more room to move.

Some doors can’t, for example in a narrow hallway or at the top of the stairs. Then ROSS hinges give the same safety, with the door still opening inwards. We will tell you which suits your door.

What people ask aboutdoor reversal.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the door be repainted after it is rehung?
No. The old hinge and latch holes are filled and primed, so they are smooth and sealed, but we don’t colour-match or repaint. Most people either live with it or have it painted when the room is next done.
Is a reversal as good as a ROSS hinge?
For safety, it is even better. A door that opens outwards can’t be blocked by someone who has fallen, so there is nothing to work out in an emergency. It also gives you more floor space. But it needs room to swing, and not every doorway has that.
Will the light switch still work?
Yes. If the door now swings across it, an electrician moves the switch. We check for this on the visit and include it in the quote, so there are no surprises on the day.
How much space does it give back?
About three-quarters of a square metre, the area the door used to swing through. In a small toilet or ensuite, that is often most of the free floor, and the reason a walker wouldn’t fit.
Should I do this instead of widening the doorway?
It is worth pricing first. Widening means taking out the frame and often part of the wall, so it is a major modification. A reversal costs much less and often gives you the same room. If it isn’t enough, we will tell you, because we do both.
