What we look atbefore the colour.

A floor is the most common place a fall starts, so three things get decided before anyone opens a sample book.

  • Slip resistance when wet

Bathroom and laundry floors are specified to a slip rating, not chosen by finish. A tile that grips dry can be dangerous wet.

  • Level transitions between rooms

Thresholds and trims are the trip hazard people forget. Where floor types meet, we level the junction rather than cover it with a strip.

  • Contrast where it matters

A change of tone at a doorway or a step edge is what low-vision eyes read as "something changes here". Tone-on-tone looks calm and hides the step.

Questions

What people ask aboutfloor coverings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which floor is safest in a bathroom or laundry?
One specified to a slip rating for wet use, rather than chosen from a sample board. A tile that grips perfectly well dry can be dangerous wet, and the rating is the only thing that tells you which is which.
Can you remove the step between two rooms?
Usually. Where two floor types meet we level the junction rather than cover the difference with a trim strip, because that strip is exactly the lip people catch a toe or a walker wheel on.
Is carpet a good idea for someone using a walking frame?
Carpet cushions a fall and quietens a room, which are real benefits. A deep pile, though, is hard work to push a frame or a wheelchair across, so where carpet is the right answer we specify a low loop pile.
Do you supply the flooring as well as lay it?
Yes, we do both. Working from one supplier through to installation is what lets us hold the slip rating, the level transitions, and the contrast at doorways to the specification, rather than hoping the product someone else ordered meets it.
Why does contrast at a doorway matter?
A change of tone is what low-vision eyes read as “something changes here”. Matching the floors either side of a step looks calm and hides it, which is precisely the wrong outcome at the top of a stair.
