A lip that catchesfeet and wheels.

Many doors, especially in older homes, have a raised lip at the bottom, called a sill. It keeps the rain out. But a walker catches on it, a wheelchair wheel stops against it, and it is easy to trip on.

A threshold insert fills the gap. It is made to the shape of your doorway, so the floor runs smoothly from inside to out. We fit it to meet whatever is on the other side, like a landing, a step, or the top of a ramp.

  • Merbau

    A tough hardwood for outside doors. It stands up to the weather and can match your deck or verandah.

  • Timber ply

    For inside doors, or doors under cover. It can be painted or stained to suit your floor.

  • Rubber

    Just sits in place, with no drilling, so it suits a rental. Weatherproof and non-slip.

  • A bright edge

    A contrast strip along the front edge, so you can see it clearly. It can go on any of the three.

More thana small lip?

An insert fills a small lip. If there is a full step down outside the door, you need a ramp instead. We often fit both together: a ramp up to the door, and an insert through it.

What is the difference between a threshold insert and a ramp?
An insert fills the gap, so the floor runs level through the doorway. A ramp slopes over the gap. For a small lip, an insert is usually neater. For a full step, you need a ramp. They are often fitted together.
Will it let water into the house?
Not if it is measured properly, which is why we don’t sell them off the shelf. The lip is there to keep rain out, so we set the insert to level the doorway without trapping water against the door. On a very exposed door, we may suggest a smaller insert and a ramp instead.
Can I have a threshold insert in a rental?
A rubber insert, yes. Nothing is drilled, and it lifts straight out when you leave. Timber and merbau inserts are screwed down, so those need the owner’s or the agent’s permission first.
Can it go at a bathroom door?
Yes. It is often needed where a raised lip keeps water in the bathroom but stops a shower chair getting through. We check how the bathroom floor slopes first, because the lip is keeping water in. Sometimes the honest answer is that the floor itself needs work.
