A handrail is the rail you run your hand along while you are moving — up a staircase, down the front steps, along a ramp or a garden path. It is a different job from a grab rail, which is a fixed point you take hold of in one place, and it is fitted differently because of it.
We install handrails inside and outside the home across Melbourne, for older people, NDIS participants, aged-care clients, and anyone who has come home from hospital to find the steps harder than they were.
Every rail is measured to the run it serves rather than cut from a standard length, and fixed into structure — studs, brick or a set footing — not into plasterboard alone.

The four runs we are asked for most, in roughly that order.
Internal stairs
A continuous rail along the wall, returned into the wall at both ends so a sleeve or a bag cannot catch on it.
Front and back steps
One side or both, depending on how the steps are used. Two rails let someone come down facing forwards rather than sideways.
Ramps
Rails either side of an access ramp, running the full length including the landings, so there is never a stretch with nothing to hold.
Paths and corridors
A rail along a garden path or a long hallway, on posts where there is no wall to fix to.

Most homes do not present a clean run. A rail has to get past a downpipe, change height over a landing, or turn a corner at the top of a flight. That is measuring and fabrication work, not a product off a shelf.
We look at what the wall is made of before quoting, because that decides the fixing and sometimes the rail. Brick, weatherboard, render over foam and plasterboard on studs each need a different approach, and a rail fixed into the wrong one will hold for a while and then will not.

It is fixed work, and it means drilling
Rails are bolted into the structure of the building — a wall, a floor, or a footing. There is no adhesive or suction version that will hold a person’s weight in a fall.
If you rent, ask first
You will need the owner’s or the agent’s permission before we can start. Ring us and we will tell you what they usually want to see — most say yes once they know what is involved.
Manufacture and preparation
Studs, noggings, brick, or a set footing. Where a wall genuinely cannot carry a rail we say so on the visit rather than after it is installed.

Carried out by licensed tradespeople, as with everything else we do.

Quoting and measurement
A licensed member of the team looks at the run, the wall, and how the person actually moves through it. There is no charge for the visit.
A fixed price in writing
Set out so a plan manager, case manager or occupational therapist can approve it without coming back to us for more detail.
Manufacture
Lengths, bends, and returns are made for your run rather than trimmed from stock on the day.
Installation
Most handrail jobs are done in a day. We take the offcuts and the packaging with us.
Warranty
The work is carried out by licensed tradespeople and backed by the relevant warranties. If something is not right, ring the same number you rang the first time.

The three kinds wefit most often.
Which one you need is usually decided by where it goes, not by preference.
Timber handrails — inside
Internal staircases, landings, and hallways. Warmer to hold, and finished to sit with the joinery already in the house.
Banister rails — outside
Steel, for front steps, external ramps, and sloping paths. Wall mounted, or on their own posts where there is no wall.
Modular grab rails — bathrooms
Sections and joiners set out to the room, for the corners and heights a one-piece rail cannot make.
Grab rails are adifferent job.
If what you need is a short rail to take hold of in one spot — beside the toilet, in the shower, next to the front door — that is a grab rail, and it is measured and placed differently.
