Vital Ease — home modification and maintenance solutions

How long doesyour ramp need to be?

Enter the height of the step, choose a gradient, and watch the ramp draw itself to scale — with the landings and handrails it needs.

Measure from the ground to the top of the step or doorway, in millimetres.

Gradient

1:14 means 14 mm along for every 1 mm up.

How far out from the door the ramp can go, in metres.

A 180 mm rise at 1:14 needs 2.52 m of ramp, 4.92 m in total with landings.

A full access ramp

The kind we design and build, with handrails on both sides and flat landings to rest and open the door.

See wheelchair access ramps

A planning guide based on AS 1428.1 and the National Construction Code. Every ramp we build is measured and designed on site, where the ground, the door, and the space decide the final design.

Understanding the numbers

What each gradientmeans for you.

  • 1:14 — recommended

The steepest gradient AS 1428.1 allows for a full access ramp, and the one we build to wherever there is room. A rest landing is needed at least every 9 metres.

  • 1:20 — gentlest

Easier again for someone pushing themselves, with landings every 15 metres. At this gradient AS 1428.1 treats it as a walkway, so handrails are not strictly required. It needs a lot of space, so it suits long, open paths.

  • 1:10 — short step ramps

Allowed for a step ramp up to 190 mm high and 1.9 metres long. Good for a single step where space is tight.

  • 1:8 — steepest at a house

The limit for a ramp at a home under the National Construction Code, and for very short threshold and kerb ramps. Over a full step it is hard work in a wheelchair.
