A lip at the door can stop a walker. A door that swings into a small bathroom leaves no room to turn. And a door that won’t stay open means holding it with one hand and your walker with the other.

Most of this can be fixed on the doors you already have.

The most important change is the one people forget. If someone falls behind a bathroom door that opens inwards, nobody can get in to help. Special hinges fix that.

Which door modification should I do first?
If you have a toilet or bathroom door that opens inwards, start with the hinges. It is the change that matters most in an emergency. After that, it is usually the lip at the door you use most, because that is what stops a walker and catches toes.
Will you repaint the door afterwards?
No. Where a hinge or latch is moved, we fill and prime the old holes, but we don’t colour-match or repaint the door or the frame. Most people either live with it or have it painted when the room is next done.
Can any of this be done in a rental?
A rubber threshold insert can, because it just sits in place and leaves no mark. Everything else is screwed into the door, frame, or floor, so it needs the owner’s or the agent’s permission. Call us and we will tell you which parts can be undone later.
Do you widen doorways as well?
Yes, but it is a bigger building job, because the frame and part of the wall come out. We quote it separately as a major modification. A door reversal is worth pricing first: it costs much less and often gives you the same space.
Will the NDIS or my Home Care Package pay for door work?
Usually. Everything on this page is a minor home modification, which is the simplest kind to get approved. Occupational therapists often recommend ROSS hinges in particular. We set out our quotes so they are easy to approve.
