Going through a door in a wheelchair is one thing. Closing it behind you is another. The handle ends up behind your shoulder, too high to reach.

It is the same if you can’t turn easily, after a hip replacement or with a walker. You end up backing into the doorway to reach the handle, which is where falls happen.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will it fit my door?
Almost certainly. The strap adjusts to fit most home doors. The fittings depend on the door: screen doors take one kind, and timber doors are screwed. Tell us which you have when you call, so we bring the right ones.
Can I have one without drilling?
No. A strap is pulled hard, many times a day, and a stick-on one could let go while you pull from a chair. It is screwed to the door, so if you rent, you will need the owner’s permission.
Is it worth booking a visit just for this?
Usually not on its own, because it is such a small part. We would rather add it to a visit that is already happening. If you have nothing else planned, call us anyway. We will tell you honestly whether it is worth it.
What height should it be set at?
At the height you pull from. From a wheelchair, that is around lap height. A strap set for someone standing won’t work from a chair, so we set it on the day with you there.
Will it get caught in the door?
Not if it is set to the right length, which is why we adjust it on site. On outside and screen doors, we set it a little shorter, so it stays clear of the closing edge.
