A small gapcan cause a fall.

Where the hallway carpet meets the bathroom tiles, there is often a small gap or lip. For years you step over it without noticing.

Then you start using a walker, and every lip has to be lifted over. A wheelchair wheel can drop into the gap and stop. And a raised carpet edge is just the thing to catch a toe.

A cover strip closes the gap with a gentle slope on each side. Wheels roll across, and feet have nothing to catch on.

What is the difference between a cover strip and a threshold insert?
Height. A cover strip joins two floors at about the same level that have a small gap between them. A threshold insert fills a bigger lip, like the raised edge at an outside door. If one side is more than a few millimetres higher, you need an insert or a small ramp.
Can it be fitted without drilling?
No. A glued strip lifts at one end within months, and then it is a worse trip hazard than the gap. We screw it down so it stays put for years.
Will it work for a wheelchair?
Yes, that is mainly what it is for. The strip slopes gently on both sides, so the small front wheels roll across instead of dropping into the gap. We use aluminium because a wheelchair crossing it every day would wear out plastic or timber.
How many should I do?
Usually every doorway on the way you walk each day, not just one. Each strip is quick to fit, so doing them all in one visit makes sense. One lip left on the route is still a trip hazard.
We are getting new flooring. Should we do this at the same time?
Yes, it is the best time. New flooring often changes the height of a room, which leaves a new lip at every doorway out of it. Fitting the strips at the same time deals with them all at once.
Can I have cover strips fitted if I rent?
Ask the owner first, because each strip is screwed into the floor. Most owners agree, because it protects the carpet edge too.
