Is a key safe actually secure?
It is much safer than a key under a mat or pot plant, which is what it usually replaces. It is not as safe as having no key outside at all. But if you can’t easily reach the door, or a fall behind a locked door is the worry, it is almost always the right choice.
Where should a key safe be mounted?
Somewhere solid, out of the weather, and not the first place a stranger would look. Right beside the front door is handy but obvious, so we often suggest a wall a step or two away. We decide together before drilling.
Can several carers and family members share one code?
Yes, that is the usual way. One code can go to your care agency, your family, and the ambulance service. You can change it whenever you like, such as when a carer stops visiting. That is far easier than changing a lock.
Can a key safe be fitted to a brick or rendered wall?
Yes. Brick, concrete, and solid timber are ideal. Rendered walls are fine too, as long as there is something solid behind. It can’t go on plasterboard alone, because it would pull away.
Can I have a key safe fitted if I rent?
Yes, with the owner’s permission. It is bolted into the wall, so it leaves holes if it comes off. Most owners are happy to agree once they know what it is for.
