Many older showers have a raised lip of tiles at the entry, called a hob. It keeps the water in, but it is hard to step over, and a shower chair can’t cross it at all.
A shower base insert is a raised platform made to fit your shower. It lifts the shower floor up level with the top of the hob, so there is nothing left to step over.
It isn’t fixed to anything. Water drains straight through it, and it lifts out for cleaning. That is why it suits a rental or a unit.
